Remember Pita

The $1.30 Panaderia Chicken Pita has always held my taste buds in captivated rapture by the way that its two tastes of savoury chicken mince and soft, flavourful pita bread tango on my tongue.

Or at least, that was how things used to be, until tonight...

I sank my teeth into its flesh, feverishly anticipating the same savoury satisfaction that I had come to expect of such fine food. The severity of the contradiction that I subsequently experienced, was enough to contort my face with sheer horror.

The bread was stiff, cold and lifeless to the touch. The expectedly juicy chicken mince had become bland and wiry. Dearest pita had succumbed to the merciless effects of oxidative decomposition and low humidity.

I had left it out in the cold for too long. Untended to, unloved, the once warm, vibrant pita had become a shell of its former existence. In my fear and my greed, I hid her away from the world, afraid that she would leave me for another. Ironically, it is my desire for dearest Pita that has driven her away from me, and those who might've gotten to meet her, forever till next week.

Do not take a bun out of the box unless you plan to eat it. Never forget Pita.
